What Causes Asphalt Roofing Shingles to Blister in Kings Beach, CA & How to Fix Shingle Roof Blistering

Your roof is your home’s number one defense against mother nature. A properly installed asphalt shingle roof should last homeowners between 20-25 years before it needs to be replaced. Even though asphalt shingle roofs are durable, there are still a number of issues that can cause damage to them. One of those issues is asphalt shingle blistering. Nickerson Roofing is here to talk about asphalt shingle blistering and how to prevent it from happening.

What Causes Blistering on Asphalt Shingles?

To know how blistering happens, you need to understand how asphalt shingles are made. These shingles are made from two layers: a backing layer and then a granule layer. When they are being made, rolls of the backing layer are soaked in hot asphalt. After the soaking is done, granules are embedded on one side of the shingle. During this process, moisture can get trapped in between the asphalt and the granule layer. When it is exposed to the sun or heat, it can cause the moisture to expand and cause blisters.

What Asphalt Shingle Blistering Looks Like

Asphalt shingle blistering is one of the most common issues that we see on homes. This is often mistaken for hail damage because it looks extremely similar. When you have blistering on your roof, it can shorten the lifespan of your roof if it isn’t dealt with. If there is any chance that you have shingle blistering, it is important that you stay on top of it and know what to look for so it can get repaired.

How Do You Prevent Roof Blisters

The biggest thing you can do to prevent shingle blistering is to make sure you are choosing high quality shingles. These shingles will be much more durable and will hopefully not have any blisters that pop. When the blisters pop, that’s when you have a problem that leaves your roof exposed to the elements. If there are any blisters on your roof, it is important that you don’t walk on the roof as this will usually cause them to pop. When a blister pops, there is an area that doesn’t have the granules any longer. Those granules play an important role in keeping your home safe from excessive moisture and water damage.

Why is Attic Ventilation Important

Another reason you may have blistering happens because you don’t have the attic ventilation that is needed. Shingles that have had blistering can always be replaced, but if you don’t have the attic insulation fixed, you will likely run into the same problem again, down the road. There are several reasons why attic ventilation is important. Ice dam issues, shingle blistering, increased energy bills during the summer and other problems often arise when there isn’t enough attic insulation.
