Gutters play a major role in keeping the home protected from water damages. If water puddles near the foundation, the foundation can sink and the soil will shift. When the gutters are damaged, water can leak around the roof and siding of the home. When gutters begin to break down it is time to replace them. Nickerson Roofing would like to share some common signs that it is time to replace the gutters.
How Do You Fix Cracks in Gutters?
Even the tiniest crack or spilt in the gutter can become a major problem. The small cracks can become bigger over time and water will begin to drip out, eroding the gutter even faster. When the gutter develops cracks and the water begins to drip, it can damage the fascia board, the shingles above the gutter, and of course, the foundation. When the gutters begin to develop crack and or splits it is time to replace the gutters.
Peeling Gutter Paint & Orange Flakes
You might notice that the gutter’s paint has begun to flake off. This happens when the gutters begin to age. Often when the paint begins to peel off this is a sign the gutters are getting pretty old. However, when the gutter develops orange scales that flake off, the gutters are eroding. Most gutters are made of steel and will rust and flake away when they reach a certain age. The orange stains and flakes are rust. Once the rust begins to eat way at the gutter, its days are numbered. Once paint peels and orange flakes start, you will want to begin preparing to replace your gutters.
Signs of Gutter Water Damage
There can be a number of different signs of water damage to look for when inspecting your gutters. When inspecting your gutters to assess their condition, start by looking at the ground. Pooling water is never good especially near the home’s foundation. Pooling water may not be considered water damage, but it can be a major problem. Additionally, look for mildew or mold developing along the ground or on the side or roof of the home. Mold and mildew requires water to remain for some time. When gutters have a loose connection or have broken it will supply plenty of water for mold or mildew to develop. Next, look for water stains either along the side of the home or on the edges of the gutter themselves. Signs of water damage or the presence of water is a sign that the gutters are not doing their job and it may be time to have them replaced.
Loose or Sagging Gutters
When the gutters begin to sag, this can be a sign that the gutters are losing their integrity. When sections begin to become too loose or become detached, the gutters are in need of repair. If the gutters have been so badly damaged that they begin to sag, it is time to replace the gutter system.
